Job Description:
The Licensed Vocational Nurse provides general nursing care,
administers medications and performs treatments to patients within
a nursing unit guided by the policies and procedures of the
hospital under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.Essential
Duties :Nursing ProcessAssists Registered Nurse in implementing
nursing process in direct patient careProvides accurate
observations of patients' physiological, psycho social and
spiritual needs, and reports problems, complications or
abnormalities to the Registered Nurse and/or PhysicianProvides
patient care based on the assessment and Care planContributes to
patient care based on the assessment and care planParticipates in
patient/family education as appropriate. Provides information to
patient/family relating to educational resources available. Directs
patient/family educational processAdheres to policies and
procedures in providing care including but not limited to the
following:Medication AdministrationIntravenous TherapyTreatment
ModalitiesBlood AdministrationEmergency CareEvaluates and documents
observations and care provided In the patient's medical
recordIncorporates time management skills in accomplishing
careNursing Care Delivery ProcessKnowledgeable regarding current
nursing practices and proceduresDemonstrates knowledge and use of
written resources and formsDemonstrates knowledge of administrative
resources and chain of command.Knowledge of legal aspects of
nursing careDemonstrates knowledge of legal documents pertinent to
area of careDemonstrates knowledge of Patient/Resident
RightsDemonstrates knowledge of Medication Pass as required by HCFA
as pertinent to area of careTechnical EquipmentOperates technical
equipment required in area of assignment, safely, efficiently and
accuratelyEnvironmentAssists with maintenance of safe, comfortable
and therapeutic environmentAssesses safety/cleanliness of
patient/unit environment and reports conditions requiring
changeUtilizes resources, equipment, and supplies efficiently and
with cost awarenessReports hazardous conditions to appropriate
department for correctionUses aseptic techniques for protection of
patients and personal safetyPrevents contamination and/or transfer
of infection by use of the Exposure Control Plan and Standard
Precautions in daily workDemonstrates knowledge of emergency
codesRestocks patient care areas.Leadership/ProfessionalismProvides
appropriate careAssumes responsibility for quality of care given to
assigned patientsGives accurate, concise patient care report to
team leader, physician and other appropriate personsMaintains
effective working relationships with fellow staff members, other
departments, patients, and families of patients, physicians and
volunteersFunctions appropriately and effectively under
pressureAble to provide care as part of team effort in crisis or
emergency situationAdheres to Performance Improvement process and
participates in Performance Improvement activitiesEducationAdheres
to required educational standardsMaintains current licensure,
certifications, education, and physical health standardsMust
complete 15 units of continuing education within a calendar year,
12 of these units must be in area of specialtyComputer
trainingDemonstrates knowledge and competency on hospital
Information systemParticipates in educational activitiesAttends
staff meetings regularlySuccessfully completes written and
practical competenciesCompletes 30 hour IV therapy course within
first year.CommunicationCommunicates effectively with patients,
families, visitors, and physiciansResponsible for problem solving
and crisis intervention related to physicians, patients, families,
and staffDisplays a willingness to follow directions and to accept
and utilize constructive criticismAge Specific
