university, or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing.
Description: The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides
comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed
Independent Provider's orders, dispensing and administering
medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Provider in
examinations and treatment of patients. The RN applies nursing and
supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and
referrals of inmates/residents. The RN performs all
technical/clinical procedures within the scope of his/her education
and licensure. The RN applies appropriate nursing skills in the
area and treatment of inmates/residents. The RN attends sick calls
with the physician to see inmates/residents and prepares a list of
inmates/residents to be examined. The RN prepares the examining
room and equipment. The RN operates pill call, dispenses
medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and
procedures. The RN contacts the Licensed Independent Providers for
medication and treatment orders, and responds to other emergencies.
The RN examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses
or injuries or inmates/residents who become ill or injured. The RN
refers inmates/residents to the emergency room or other appropriate
healthcare facility as required by their condition. The RN performs
emergency procedures as needed and notifies the Licensed
Independent Provider for treatment orders. The RN assists in
coordinating professional medical services provided by contract
personnel and ensures that their needs are addressed. The RN
monitors inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early
releases whenever appropriate. The RN provides guidance,
supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed
vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
The RN maintains a good working relationship with facility staff,
nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies.
The RN utilizes established corporate and facility policies and
procedures in making decisions while using sound independent
judgment in meeting responsibilities. The RN regularly evaluates
the provision of medical services to prevent the inappropriate use
or duplication of those services. The RN maintains absolute
security and confidentiality of all medical records. The RN assists
with the review of medical files to determine all provided services
are documented. The RN closely monitors all potential catastrophic
illnesses. The RN audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as
directed or required. The RN complies with all applicable pharmacy
laws, especially those covering controlled substances. The RN
observes and records inmate/resident behavior. The RN inspects the
medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by
inmates/residents and securely stores or safely disposes of
supplies and equipment. The RN provides health counseling and
health education on an individual or group basis as required. The
RN assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard
narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports,
and logs using appropriate grammar. The RN processes all reports
and documents in a timely manner. The RN reads, analyzes,
comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures,
governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents. The RN
reviews, processes, and responds to lawsuits as necessary and
attends court hearings when required. The RN evaluates and
recommends physical safety requirements necessary to provide a safe
working environment. The RN prepares and disseminates safety and
accident reports as required by policies and procedures and takes
appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
The RN escorts inmates/residents or coordinates the movement of
inmates/residents to and from different areas for medical
treatment. The RN performs searches of people and objects capable
of concealing contraband. The RN engages in functions in confined
areas, which includes working rotating shifts and performing
security checks. The RN takes appropriate action to prevent or
diffuse potentially disruptive situations. The RN performs rescue
functions during accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including
administering basic emergency medical aid and ensuring the safety
