Job Description:

This role's primary purpose is to implement rehabilitative mental health services that are integrated, individualized and tailored to the needs of the identified child. Under the general direction of the DTI Program Supervisor the Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist (MHRS), alongside with the Day Treatment therapist, primarily conducts services for clients between the ages of 3 and 6 within the milieu environment. The MHRS provides a positive role model, engages in Skill Building services, and assists in development of necessary daily living skills and competencies that are required for safe and successful residence in the community.


  • Provides group and individual skill building activities focused on social, emotional, behavioral, and functional development.
  • Participates as a full member of the Day Treatment Team observing, describing, and documenting the behavior status and progress of children in the day treatment milieu.
  • Collaborates with therapists to provide appropriate interventions for follow through in the milieu setting according to a child's individual treatment plan.
  • Collaborates with clinical staff and families to develop and implement appropriate treatment objectives and interventions for each individual child on an ongoing basis.
  • Contributes to the comprehensive assessment of functioning and ongoing evaluation of behavior and progress as part of a collaborative team.
  • Monitor's children and models appropriate verbal and nonverbal responses.
  • Assists in the de-escalation of situations in which a child acts-out. This may include monitoring brief " time-outs".
  • Participates in team meetings, reviewing status and progress of clients.
  • Assists team with preparation of materials for daily projects and activities.
  • Provides assistance and back-up for other milieu team members.
  • Provides transportation for day treatment clients and picks up lunches daily.
  • Obtains and maintains formal training in CPR/First Aid and a Behavior Management System.
  • Completes Special Incident Reports as required by the program and submits them within 24 hours.
  • As a mandated reporter, must follow child abuse reporting guidelines and report all suspicions of child abuse and/or neglect.
  • Provide rehabilitative services focused on assisting the child in restoring or maintaining any or all the following: a) functional skills, b) daily living skills, c) social skills, d) grooming and personal hygiene skills, e) medication compliance and support resources.
  • Arrange and participate in child/family team meetings for all assigned families to share observations and participate in the development of intervention plans.
  • Provide a variety of individual and system-oriented intervention services for consumers and families/foster families under the direct supervision of the Program Supervisor or his/her designee. Interventions may include but are not limited to: skill building activities, assistance with transportation, identification of needed resources, immediate behavioral interventions and reinforcements, collaboration with other members of the mental health treatment team, assisting in establishment of effective familial boundaries, assisting in linkage to community-oriented services.
  • Ensure that behavioral interventions are consistent with the individualized service plan and mental health objectives. Behavioral interventions and skill building activities are incorporated in the treatment service plan and may include but are not limited to positive reinforcement, stress reduction exercises, anger management activities, time-out strategies, time structuring activities, cognitive activity practice, modeling limit setting, coaching, and developing skill attainment activities.
  • Work closely with mental health therapist and day treatment personnel to facilitate implementation of the child/family treatment plan.
  • Document 100% of services in compliance with State of California standards for Short-Doyle/Medi-Cal/EPSDT.
  • Reviews and files DTI program paperwork daily.


Experience / Education

  • B.A. or B.S. in a mental health related field and one-year experience with S.E.D. children in a hospital, group home, day treatment, classroom, or other equivalent setting; OR
  • Two years of college plus three years of experience with S.E.D. children in a hospital, group home, day treatment, classroom, or other equivalent setting; OR
  • High School diploma plus four years of experience with S.E.D. children in a hospital, group home, day treatment, classroom, or other equivalent setting.
  • Must demonstrate an understanding and sensitivity to working in a multicultural environment and an ability to work effectively with individuals and families from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Must maintain a valid California driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Must be available to attend required training activities on various topics relevant to job performance as identified by supervisor and program management.

  • Exercise good judgment in performance of duties and responsibilities.
  • Support existing agency policies, principles, and mission.
  • Participate in a multi-cultural team approach that is sensitive to the cultural and linguistic needs of the families served.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
